How to Choose a Dayhome in Calgary
Finding the right dayhome for your child can feel overwhelming. This friendly guide walks you through what a dayhome is, what to look for when you visit, the questions to ask, and a simple checklist you can use — written for busy Calgary families.
Licensed (agency) vs. private dayhomes
In Alberta, family day homes come in two main types:
- Agency-approved (licensed): The provider works with a licensed agency that screens, monitors, and supports them. These homes are eligible for the provincial child care subsidy.
- Private (independent): The provider runs independently. Many are wonderful and experienced — but they are not monitored by an agency, and subsidy usually does not apply.
Neither is automatically "better." What matters most is the person caring for your child, the environment, and the fit for your family. Use the type as one factor among many.
What to look for when you visit
Always visit in person before deciding. While you're there, notice:
- Is the home clean, safe, and child-friendly (gates, covered outlets, secure storage of medicines/cleaners)?
- Are the children there happy, engaged, and comfortable with the provider?
- Is there a safe outdoor space or a plan for daily active play?
- Does the provider seem warm, patient, and genuinely interested in your child?
- Is there a calm daily routine (meals, naps, play, learning)?
Questions worth asking
- How many children do you care for, and what are their ages?
- What does a typical day look like?
- Are your First Aid and CPR certifications current?
- How do you handle illness, allergies, and emergencies?
- What meals and snacks do you provide?
- How will you keep me updated about my child's day?
- What are your hours, fees, and policies for sick days and holidays?
- Can you share references from other families?
Subsidy & affordability
Alberta offers child care subsidy and affordability support that can significantly lower your monthly cost — most commonly with agency-approved (licensed) dayhomes. It's worth checking what you qualify for before you decide.
Trust your instincts (and watch for red flags)
A good provider welcomes your questions and a visit. Be cautious if someone won't let you see the space, is vague about who else is in the home, pressures you to decide immediately, or if anything simply feels off. You're choosing who cares for your child — it's okay to take your time.
